About Fern Tree
![]() |
Fern Tree is Hobart's mountain suburb. We are on the slopes of Mt Wellington, 400m above sea level, about 10km south-west of the city centre. Surrounded by bush - our homes are spread out along a couple of main axes: Huon Road and Summerleas Road, with a number of smaller streets too. The road to Mt Wellington heads up from Fern Tree, just below the tavern. Huon Road used to be the main route south from Hobart towards Huonville, but was superseded in the 1980's by the Southern Outlet, leaving Fern Tree as a quiet, leafy, beautiful place to live. |

Fern Tree has a tavern at the junction of Stephensons Place and Summerleas Road. At the end of Stephensons Place is the Community Centre, and the Fern Tree Fire Station is nearby in Summerleas Road. Opposite Stephensons Place St Raphael's Church and nearby is a barbeque and picnic area and public toilets. This is also the starting point for many of the lower level walks on Mount Wellington, in particular the Pipeline Track, which follows the route of the water pipeline supplying some of Hobart's water. Other routes head up towards The Springs and the Pinnacle. See our Walks page. |
